What’s the true value behind the Wistia cost?

It’s a question we at Dubb have to ask ourselves at times.

Why?

Because understanding the value and prospective offerings of our competitors helps us create better products and services for you the consumer.

And the basis of better begins with value—and value is intrinsically tied to price.

So, in this post, we’ll be taking out the magnifying glass and pointing it towards the Wistia cost. We’ll be looking at the key aspects of their video marketing service, how they stack up to our own, and give a final—and honest—evaluation of how Wistia stacks up.

So, let’s get started…

But first…

What is Wistia?

A pricing chart for Wistia (the second half)

In short, Wistia is a video marketing platform that specializes in embedding and hosting content for analytics tracking. This means that you can upload a video to your website using Wistia and have a much greater ability to track your views, watch time, and other relevant analytics categories.

It’s best to think of Wistia as primarily a hosting and embedding platform, in this sense—although they do have sharing capabilities for their videos—their recording functionality is actually split into a separate application called, Soapbox.

Don’t ask us why.

However, we will take this opportunity to note that Dubb is a hosting platform and video capturing application all-in-one. Whether you’re trying to record a video in the car on your smartphone or taking one from your laptop’s webcam, once you’ve downloaded the Dubb application, you’re good to go.

With the basics out of the way, here comes the good part…

How Much Does Wistia Cost?

Let’s take a look at the Wistia cost…

And compare it to Dubb’s…

Start from left to right with Wistia and Dubb’s free pricing level.

“Freemium” Tier

As you can see, right out of the gate the limits of the Wistia cost versus Dubb’s are obvious. To start, Wistia only offers “3 videos for hosting” whereas Dubb offers unlimited video sharing—which includes hosted “landing pages” where its users’ videos will live.

And that’s a big difference.

Again, it’s important to remember that Wistia is largely an embedding platform. That is, you create the videos, upload them to Wistia, and then use the platform’s tech to embed them on your domain to track the results.

Dubb, on the other hand, specializes in not only hosting the video content that you can record within the app, but also in sending your video messages out to any prospect in your contact list via email, SMS, and social sharing.

The ability to do this to an unlimited degree—and free, at that—is just icing on top of the cake.

Now, let’s look at the next tier up…

The Pro Tier

Dubb

This is obviously the stage where the differences in user pricing are most apparent. In the case of Dubb, the pro-level user can expect to pay $40 a month for a variety of features (which we’ll get into shortly) and even get a discount of 20% if the service is paid up for a year in advance.

The features of Dubb at this level are pretty substantial, too. HD quality video sharing and a potential recipient list totaling 10K.

If you’re a salesperson/marketer, you know first hand that 10,000 prospects for a single user is a LOT—in most cases, more than you’ll ever need—and that’s 10K a month.

Along with the ability to mass message your contact list, you’ll also get customizable marketing assets such as landing pages, URLs, and call-to-action options. And for those who need a little extra help assimilating Dubb’s video marketing platform into their existing system, we also offer a specially-designated support channel filled with helpful videos here.

These videos can help you get your revamped marketing/sales process up and rolling with little friction. Covering topics from how to send a video via SMS to properly following up with your potential prospects, the Dubb support channel is everything you need to get the most out of video marketing platform—and do so as early as possible.

Now, on the other hand, let’s take a look at the Wistia pricing at the pro level.

Wistia

To start, it’s more than double Dubb’s price point but let’s explore what you get for your monthly subscription.

You get to host 10 videos.

That’s it.

To be frank, that’s not a lot of videos to collect detailed analytics on. This means that for these videos to be effective, they’re going to need to be extremely well-produced.

Which means you’re going to need a sizable budget.

Again, when it comes to many solopreneur, entrepreneurs, small business operations, or even large-scale enterprises, the cost can be a significant factor in the decision to adopt something new.

When looking to add a new system to an already sensitive process—your sales or marketing process—proposing an additional video marketing budget that is certain to come in within the tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars range can become a non-starter.

Who wants to create a video marketing team, rent or buy video equipment, play trial-and-error to find the sweet spot between quality content and your brand identity, just to only get the analytics on ten of these types of spots a month?

There’s just too much room for error and wasted dollars.

Instead, if you want to be successful at video marketing, you need a platform that encourages you to send a multitude of videos with the analytics to track what’s working so you can tweak and adjust your strategy as needed.

And moving on to our final section…

The Premium Tier

Dubb

As you can see, with Dubb you get all of the customizable perks and benefits of our Pro tier with more advanced analytics options. You also get added support options including direct access via phone day and night, as well as a designated account manager for your team.

Most importantly, you get bumped up to a prospect list of 50K contacts.

And that’s per month.

For an individual, that’s a tall order for prospective contacts, but for a team or enterprise-level account, it’s more than enough to get you up-and-rolling.

With the Pro Plus level of Dubb’s premium service offerings, you gain better service and more support, and all for the cost of their mid-tier subscription offering.

Now, let’s take a look at Wistia’s top-tier offering for comparison…

Wistia

There’s a BIG jump here in terms of hosted videos.

That’s huge because it makes the argument for Wistia’s hosting and embedding platform stronger. The reason being is because there are few companies producing 100 high-quality pieces of original content per month to host on their website.

However, there’s one big flaw here.

The Wistia cost isn’t listed.

This tells you that the price is likely much higher than their mid-tier offering and they’d rather speak with prospective customers on the phone about it than to potentially blow the sale online.

And there’s an important insight to be derived from the Wistia cost information:

They’re likely aiming for big clients.

Whenever you see companies with top tier pricing like this left blank, it’s usually a clue as to which consumer demographic they’re trying to target.

In the case of Dubb, our pricing is meant to be affordable and even, allowing our users to pick and choose the services that they need without running up their budget dramatically.

On the other hand, the Wistia cost jumps from $0 to $100 to $??? implying that their bread-and-butter clients—the ones that keep the lights on—are these top tier clients.

Which is totally fine…if you have a top-tier budget.

But if you’re a solopreneur, entrepreneur, small-business owner, or budget-conscious enterprise business, you likely want to avoid adding a bulky marketing expense to your budget—particularly if you’ve got a mindset to grow.

The Final Verdict: Is the Wistia Cost Worth It?

A screenshare video of wista vs dubb

Although we’re obviously a little biased in this regard, if we were speaking to a friend with a small business and a desire to grow, we’d tell them no. The problem with Wistia is not its product or service offerings, but rather its exponential pricing structure.

Because the price of Wistia’s subscription services can be prohibitively expensive at the end with the greatest value offering, unless you’re a large scale enterprise client that has the ability to throw hundreds—if not thousands—at your video marketing budget, Wistia may not be the correct video platform for you.

In terms of features, Dubb offers a variety of sharing and hosting options—and does so from a single application, not two. For this sake, the best value when it comes to Wistia’s pricing will—in our opinion—always lean closer towards Dubb for entrepreneurs and small business owners looking to grow their business with a reasonable budget in mind.
