Internet advertising accounted for a lion\u2019s share of the spending in the U.S. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/191926\/us-ad-spending-by-medium-in-2009\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">100 billion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), followed by TV and radio (71 billion and 17.7 billion). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For small businesses and start-ups, the U.S. Small Business Administration recommends spending \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/smallbusiness.chron.com\/percentage-gross-revenue-should-used-marketing-advertising-55928.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7 to 8 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of your gross revenue on marketing if you\u2019re [making] less than $5 million a year in sales\u201d. The National Federation of Independent Business: \u201cmost businesses allocate between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/yourbusiness.azcentral.com\/much-money-average-company-spend-advertising-6766.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2 and 5 percent of sales specifically for advertising<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So if you\u2019re a small business that made $100,000 in gross sales, $7,000 should be spent on marketing, and $5,000 should be spent on advertising. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But&#8230;that\u2019s still $12,000 dollars. That\u2019s still quite a chunk of change, without a guarantee of ROI. (Although, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dubb.com\/blog\/why-you-should-use-videos-in-email-campaigns\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as we\u2019ve discussed before<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, email campaigns have the greatest ROI and are the most cost-efficient campaigns.) So while advertising is the bread and butter of any company, finding the most cost-efficient method is key. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there\u2019s a lot of discussion on what this method is, an advertising priority should be Facebook ads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How Much Do Facebook Ads Cost?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Facebook: you can run ads <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/business\/ads\/pricing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for any budget<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You tell Facebook how much you want to spend and then FB tries to get as many results as possible for that amount. While some advanced ads require a minimum spending, you can choose to spend $5 or $60,000 per week (or more) \u2013 your choice. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, there are two ways to define cost based on a FB budget: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/business\/help\/201828586525529?ref=fbb_budgeting#\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overall amount spent or cost of each result<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The cost per result is based on \u201cbids\u201d, which control your cost per optimization. A bid is \u201ca number representing how much you value an optimization event from someone in your target audience\u201d. \u00a0Basically: a bid is the maximum you\u2019re willing to pay when someone sees your ad or follows a call-to-action. A bid could be a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/business\/a\/ad-bidding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cost per click or a cost per 1000 impressions (CPM)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s called a \u201cbid\u201d because when you set your budget, you join a worldwide FB auction: you\u2019ll be competing with thousands of advertisers for FB ad real estate. While FB tries to give everyone what they want, sometimes (not often), the real estate runs out; then, the highest bidder will win the advertising space. They\u2019re not likely to pay enough to win a real estate space, and will receive zero or low impressions. A second advertiser bids $7; and a third advertiser bids $10: the one who bid $10 will beat the person who bid $7, but will end up paying $8. Ten dollars was the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">maximum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they were willing to spend, and FB will make sure they pay just enough to beat the person below them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The average cost per click (CPC based on the average bids) \u2013 based on what FB charges every time someone clicks on an ad \u2013 is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/blog\/ws\/2017\/02\/28\/facebook-advertising-benchmarks\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$1.72 across all industries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Financial advertisers have the highest CPCs at $3.77; apparel industries have the lowest CPC at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/blog\/ws\/2017\/02\/28\/facebook-advertising-benchmarks\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">45 cents<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Those CPCs change based on how many advertisers are bidding for ad real estate \u2013 in this scenario, there are more financial advertisers bidding for ad space. . \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>So, I Can Set My Own FB Ad Budget?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basically, yes. But there are bidding strategies, which you should utilize based on your industry (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/business\/help\/245880322600819?helpref=faq_content#\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/business\/help\/1619591734742116?helpref=faq_content#\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/business\/help\/721453268045071?helpref=faq_content\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>That Sounds Great \u2013 How Do I Make the Best FB Ads? <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Okay, you\u2019ve set a budget; you\u2019ve made a bid; you\u2019re optimized bid has been accepted! So now you have to make sure you have the best ads for the real estate space you won. Below, we\u2019ve listed some actionable tips for making the best Facebook ads. <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Realistic and Relevant<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re creating your ads, you should think, \u201cWhat\u2019s the human version of that? What would that look like in real life?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That will make your ads more actionable (\u201cI could do that!\u201d) and relevant; making it more likely that someone will follow the ad\u2019s advice because it seems doable \u2013 making the viewer more likely to click.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think of runway models and their avant-garde fashion. It\u2019s beautiful but it feels otherworldly; it\u2019s hard to imagine an average person walking down the street with a swan draped around their neck as a dress. So that advertising seems unrealistic; but Old Navy commercials, or Dove commercials, make sure their products look like they\u2019re for \u201creal people\u201d, and they make sure their models look like \u201creal people\u201d. Fantasy only goes so far.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, Facebook even has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/business\/news\/relevance-score\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201crelevance scores\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: a reflection of ad performance.
