But even knowing that, you may not be sure how to harness their purchasing power. They&#8217;re stereotyped as lazy, mysterious, and cheap &#8212; but none of that is true. And believing that puts you ahead of the curve as a marketer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A \u201cMillennial\u201d is anywhere between 23 and 38 years old right now: the exact demographic that most marketers target to spread the most influence, build the best brand, and make the most sales. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spending statistics<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They spend <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lexingtonlaw.com\/blog\/credit-cards\/millennial-spending-habits.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$600 billion <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0in the United States per year<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spend two-thirds the amount that Gen X and Baby Boomers spend on entertainment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lexingtonlaw.com\/blog\/credit-cards\/millennial-spending-habits.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">94% <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Millennials use coupons, look for deals, use digital formats<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lexingtonlaw.com\/blog\/credit-cards\/millennial-spending-habits.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">54%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of purchases made online<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lexingtonlaw.com\/blog\/credit-cards\/millennial-spending-habits.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> refer to testimonials\/reviews BEFORE purchasing<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Altruistic and charitable<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The average Millennial spends <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/wesgay\/2017\/08\/11\/millennials-social-responsibility\/#6c09081d17d8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$600 per year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on charitable causes, despite highest rate of student loan debt, stagnant salaries, and rising cost of living<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.horizonmedia.com\/press\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">81%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Millennials expect companies they partner with\/buy from to publicly support charitable causes; they will switch if they believe the company is harmful to a social or environmental cause<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortune magazine found that<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/2016\/08\/11\/millennials-philanthropy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2154 of buyers between 18 and 34<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> more likely to partner with a company that donates to charity<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Millennials are on the move<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanpressinstitute.org\/publications\/reports\/survey-research\/millennials-news\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">69% <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of them get news on a mobile device at least once a day<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanpressinstitute.org\/publications\/reports\/survey-research\/millennials-news\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">88%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of them get news and opinions from Facebook every day<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The more accessible, the better<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adweek.com\/digital\/the-keys-to-winning-millennials-csr-humor-and-loyalty-rewards\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">80%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> want real-time customer service<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you funny? You gotta be funny.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A joke is worth $1000 <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The promos\/ads they remember best are the funny ones: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adweek.com\/digital\/the-keys-to-winning-millennials-csr-humor-and-loyalty-rewards\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">80% <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remember the ones that make them laugh<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does this mean for you, a marketer?<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Millennials value altruism, flexibility, and accessibility. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need Savvy social media skills<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need to be public about your charitable causes or commitments <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spend time curating reviews and testimonials: make them genuine, specific, and easy to find<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make \u2018em laugh, clown<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need to be available and accessible: combine that with social media \u2013 questions and responses via Twitter or Instagram show that you\u2019re on trend but easy-to-reach: it feels more personal.
